Greatest wrongs

What are some of the greatest wrongs society can commit? Why are they wrong?

  1. Today, our interpretation of what is wrong, does not compliment the wrongs outlined in Dante's Inferno and the seven deadly sins. These out dated accounts of what is wrong mainly highlight enjoying ones life as a sin. We participate in greed, gluttony, and indulging in pleasure daily and we do not feel guilty for it. Today we see taking someones life as one of the worst sins. We do not often judge if someone is enjoying life.

  2. I agree with Alexa and think that the wrongs have shifted since Dante's time. I feel like hate crimes and murder are the worst wrongs in society that someone can commit. The reason for this is we don't think about the consequences that come with those actions. One day we can have a friend or someone you know and the next day they could be gone. People view that as a major wrong in society today, in my point of view.

  3. In my opinion, betrayal and murder are the two big wrongs that our society could commit. Taking another life is unjust and most people in our society would say that killing is probably the worst sin because nobody has the right to take someone's life; I would have to agree. Betrayal is the other big wrong because it such a common problem in our society. Also, there are so many different people you could betray, including God, Allah, etc. Today in our society, people believe in many different types of sins and most of us do not think of greed or gluttony as sins because we all participate in them and do not feel guilty for doing so. I believe that everyone perceives the different types of sins differently and to determine which ones are the worst to commit solely depend on your own perspective.

  4. I agree with what has been said, that murder and hate crimes are the greatest sin. I also feel that greed is a big one too. Americans are real well off. We have Internet, personal computers, iPods, cellphones, cars, homes, clothes and food. In some countries people don't even have one meal or a simple pair of shoes. I think it's wrong for us to want bigger and better things when there are people in the world without the simplest of necessities.

  5. I don't think we have the right to classify which sins are worse than others. The human perspective says, "These sins are worse than these sins." Think about the big picture, why is murder classified as one of the "worst" sins, or why is saying a white lie classified as less sinful than murder? How have these been classified on levels of sin? Humans can say, "Murder is the worst sin," but that's only because its been classified as one of the worst sins for generations and generations and generations. Since murder has been one of the "worst" sins for forever, going back to the beginning of time, how was it classified as one of "worst" sins?
In the grand scheme of things, humans classify different sins as worse or better than other sins, but God, being holy, sees all sin as horrible. For example murder is classified as just as bad a sin as lying. Therefore, my human nature might think of different sins as worse than other sins, but in the end, they're all the same.

  6. I think that the worst sins that can be commited would be the killing of another human being. To take another's life and robbing them of their chance to live a long happy life is wrong on so many levels. Murderers should not be able to take lives like they do. there is not a good enough punishment for that kind of evil deed. Another horrible sin would be Avarice or greed. We have been fortunate enough to be raised in one of the most successful countries and have the gifts of a happy life, and education. There are people in the less fortunate parts of the world who can't even afford food, clean water, or shelter and these are the essentuals of life. Greed is bad because some people end up killing others because they don't want to give up what is theirs to help ohters.

  7. I believe that any form of torture is the greatest “sin” society or an individual can commit. Whether an animal or a human is being tortured, it is always wrong. Deliberately causing anyone or anything pain (physical or emotional) is so wrong to me because it causes immense damage and those who are ‘weak’ are overpowered and taken advantage of. I believe murder is very wrong, but torture seems more wrong to me because torture is long lasting, there are massive amounts of different tortures, and torturing can lead to death, while murder is done only once. Obviously, murder is not something the victim has to grapple with for the rest of his/her life.

  8. I agree with BenB about not having the right to classify sins worse than one an other. I personally go by what the bible says which is all sins hurt God the same way. A lie verse a murder both disappoint God. It is his judgement. However, as a society, I can say we are broken. The crimes we commit are appalling. If I were to say what the greatest wrong in a society is, I would say pride. As Americans we are in the top 5% of the richest people in the world! now tell me why people are still starving, uneducated, ill, homeless, abused, ect!Our pride keeps us from helping one another and to grow as a society. people have a hard time admitting that they are wrong, which leads to more crimes. Is our self image more important then the good we do behind doors? Once someone does lend a hand, they have to broadcast it on facebook by putting pictures up of themselves serving at the soup kitchen. Pride makes us judge one another and become selfish beings. Through pride, lying, cheating, abuse, and more occur.

  9. In my opinion the worst crime that society can commit is murder. Selfishly ending others lives for your own gain is the most horrid crime one could commit. Even more sickening are the serial killers who kill others for fun. What I find odd is Dante didn't label murderers as the worst sinners, but instead traitors as the worst kind of people. To me this is surprising since I have always imagined murderers as being the scourge of society. Do you think traitors are the true sinners of society? I believe that Dante's definition of traitors includes murderers as sort of traitors of human life. So in conclusion murderers are the worst sinners of society and being traitors of their own kind they are doomed to Dante's ninth level of hell. These people who kill others commit the worst crime of society.

  10. I believe judgement is the worst thing society does (or any of us do.) Judgement is the worst wrong because no human has the right to judge another. I believe that God is the only one that can judge us. Also, I would like to say I agree very much with what Ben said. Murder and lying to our eyes are not the same in anyway, but to God it is still a sin and still Satan driven. He still sees it as going against him. I think that God is the only one that can judge us on how we act towards the temptations Satan gives us. God is the only person that can truly say which one is worse. Murder or Lying. So in my opinion, Judging someone else is the worst thing someone could do.

  11. In my opinion, I think that the largest sin that somebody in society can commit would be some sort of betrayal. In Dante’s layers of hell, he also states this to be the worst sin. After reading the other responses to this question so far, I think that this is the worst sin because it incorporates many other sins. When an individual has committed murder, they have betrayed their family’s morals perhaps, or simply the morals set out by society. Also, most of the other sins can be incorporated into this general topic. Whether or not it was murder per say, betrayal can also affect more than just the person who betrayed because it will most likely either affect their friends or anyone associated with them. Therefore, out of all the sins a person can commit I think betrayal may be the worst because it incorporates many other sins within the general title, and also has an a large affect on many other people.

  12. Wrongs in society are based on the common moral code that a certain society enforces amongst the people. This basically means that some wrongs in society seem evil to some, but others living in a different culture with a different moral code might consider the same action harmless. Perspective is what defines what is considerd good and bad it just happens to be that the majority of the world population shares alot of the same views on what is considered "good" and what is considered "bad". In my personal belief murder, rape, and harming others physically and mentally is consider the worst "wrong" among most cultures worldwide.

  13. To me the worst wrong that society has today is greed. I believe this because greed is what drives the start of wars, the killing of people both in physical form and the image of ones being. No matter what is going on in the world there is always greed at the root cause of that action or actions. Greed causes people to want more power then someone elce or want more money or what ever that person thinks they can have to get ahead of someone elce. To me with out greed the other sins of this world would be nonexistent.

  14. I was actually going to say exactly what Ben said. I think that as humans we have classified sins and ranked them on a scale of how bad they are and we have assigned different punishments to different sins. One of the big things that I have learned is that God sees every sin the same and “As it is written, ‘No one is righteous – not even one. No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one” (Romans 3:10-12). I love this verse because it talks about how we all sin and we all fall short of the glory of God. Who are we to judge others for the sins they have committed when we have committed sins ourselves? Only God, who has not sinned, will judge us. But because of Gods grace and mercy we all have the change to be forgiven. He cleans us and makes us new. Some people think this is a cliché and “fake” thought but I truly believe that with God we are forgiven and he is waiting for us to follow him with outstretched arms. Jesus says, “ I don’t condemn you, go and sin no more. I love you and accept you, mercy is yours.”(John 8:10-11)

  15. Personally, I believe that a sin is a sin, and there is no sin that is greater or lesser than another. So I agree with Ben's statement that all sins are the same. I don't really know if i agree with the way that Dante classified the levels of hell, because he depicted them as the first level is a group a sinners who did this, the next is a group who did worse, and so on. So I don't like the way it is described as different levels. All sins are equal in the end.

  16. I believe that the worst sin a society can commit is to make sins a social norm. I believe that you see this in America today in that in Christianity you aren’t supposed to have sex before marriage but American society today has told people that it is ok to have sex before marriage because everyone else is doing it. I believe that society should respect these religious rules and not tell make the society show people that it is ok to break these rules. I believe that is the greatest sin a society can commit.

  17. First off I would like to comment that we are talking about two different things, some people are talking about wrongs and others are talking about sins. To some people these may be treated as the same thing but in society as a whole i think there needs to be a distinction. Sins are religious and maybe rank by your religion. Wrongs my be by your standers sins but I think wrongs can be ranked by society by bad to worst according to that society's structure but are not religious, they apply to all in the society. I personally believe that the greatest wrong a society can commit is war. War is absolutely nothing but killing innocent lives over ignorant thoughts and actions, it WILL create death and destruction there is no getting around it in any way or else it would not be war. That is why it is the Greatest wrong. As far as the worst sin goes I agree with Ben and Mitch in the fact that none of us are God and there for cannot put labels on sins.

  18. I agree with Dante that the deepest circle of hell is reserved fir those who betray the people closest to them. That is the reason that I believe marital infidelity and divorce to be the worst sins. What could de greater the bedrail of your spouse and family. I believe this to be a greater sin in today's world than say murder because it has become common practice in society. I also think that it is one of the worst sins because when you destroy a family like that you are hurting so many people that have done nothing wrong. I also view this as the worst sins because I have seen the way fallen apart marriages have hurt so many people around me. Friends of mine have had to deal with very serious problems at a very young age because of the sins and mistakes of their parents. That is why I think that marital infidelity and divorce are the worst sins of the modern world.

  19. Most chaos caused in society traditionally resides in the fact that many people put themselves before others. Example is like a robber or identity thief, who think about their own benefits when receiving the other person's money, not the defaults that person will experience with the loss. But it doesn't just apply to theft, but even to the deepest depths of Dante's inferno-that in the situation of betrayal, there is someone caring for themselves by putting another under the bus. But this all concludes to one thing-something that everyone has been told- that the center of evil is greed. Overall, everyone has done this one sin by committing others, all being done because they wanted to love that other man to disrespecting the parent's wishes in order to attend a party, the intention of getting what is desired creates the greatest wrong in this society.

  20. The greatest wrong a society/individual can commit would be one which deprives another human of a basic right of life. I believe sins and wrongs are simply the same thing, with respect to the religious implications of a sin, and the more secular term, "wrongs". Returning to my initial statement, any act which deprives another human of food, shelter, health, happiness, etc is the worst possible because it is just so inhumane and affects others. I am not one to care what another decides to do with themselves, after all one should be able to have freedom over themselves, but when someone makes a decision that threatens another's life or well-being, they take other people's fate into their hands and it becomes a worse wrong-doing than it should be.

  21. I agree with Dante because betrayal is by far the worst sin in society. Betrayal can include other sins, such as murder or greed. However, betrayal is the worst sin because it is a lie that hurts many people at once. This causes there to be a lack of trust between people. Countries take betrayal very serious and punish it harshly. For example, if the head of the CIA sold information to another country, this would be taken more seriously than murder. Betrayal is the worst sin because a person trusted you, and you hurt them by breaking the trust and performing the sin.

  22. The worst sin in all of society is murder. The act of taking someones life away for your own selfishness would be in the last circle of Dante's hell in my mind. Murder is such a final decision that once it is completed nothing can fix it. With betrayal you can apologize and work on getting your relationship better but with murder, you cannot ever fix that problem.
