Act V Blog Question

What do you think will happen to the people of Denmark now that Hamlet, Laretes, and the King are dead and Fortinbras is now taking over? Why do you think Fortinbras is now the king and not Horatio?

  1. I think that the people of Denmark will probably have to deal with the fact that an enemy of King Hamlet is now taking over and they will have to hope that Fortinbras doesn't destroy their empire. I think the people will sort of be lost since their is no person like Hamlet to sort of guide them in the right direction. Also, since Horatio is not becoming king, he will not be able to help guide the the people and I think that Fortinbras will eventually lead the country and the people into chaos. I think that Fortinbras is the king just because he has some experience as a king and Horatio does not have any experience as a king or ruler. Since everyone died and Fortinbras was already in Denmark, he was just the logical choice to become King and not Horatio, who does not have any experience.

  2. I think Fortinbras will be a responsible leader because he has past experience in leading countries well. Fortinbras shows good leadership qualities which leads me to think he has the ability to restore the country. I think that the best possible solution is having someone who is not related to King Hamlet and all the current drama rule because people can fully put their trust in him. revenge is no longer an option for any kings.

  3. I think that the people of Denmark are in good hands with Fortinbras as their King. I think Fortinbras would be a good King because he seems like a responsible leader. I think Fortinbras is King and not Horatio because Fortinbras was going to take over anyways since his army was already there.

  4. Now that Hamlet, Laertes, and King Hamlet are all dead and Fortinbras is king of Denmark, I believe that the people of Denmark will have a period of inner turmoil. They will be shocked with all the death and lying that has been going in their kingdom and will be hesitant to trust the new king. But I believe that Fortinbras will be a good king. We don't know much about Fortinbras, but I feel like his actions at the end of the play will resemble the type of actions he will have during his rule as king.
I don't think Horatio is the king because Hamlet chose Fortinbras to be king. Hamlet saw Fortinbras as a better fit for king and didn't want Horatio to go through the things that Hamlet went through with his connection to the throne. It is likely that Fortinbras will have some connection to the throne, because he had such a connection to Hamlet, who gave Fortinbras his power.

  5. I feel that the people of Denmark will continue to live their lives as normal. Heratio could not have been king because he is not of royal blood. the reason Fortinbras is king is becasue he took a army and took the thrown. weather it was in a time of desperation or not he is king becasue he took the thrown. Fortinbras will bring stability to the region because he is level headed unlike the whole Hamlet regime.

  6. I feel that the people of Denmark will have more peace in the terms of less drama at court and certainly less political drama between Norway and Denmark. I do agree with Ben that the people will have some turmoil when they fully realize what has been happening at the palace over the last six months. But I do feel that they will embrace Fortinbras as their king not only because he has shown excellent leadership in the past but also he comes with Hamlet's recommendation and Hamlet did hold great sway with the people of Denmark.
As to the matter of Horatio taking the throne; it will never happen. First I don't see Horatio wanting the throne and he has just seen the most disastrous scene the Danish court has probably ever beheld I certainly don't want to be associated with that ever.

  7. I think Fortinbras was rewarded in the end for being king because he honored his father by taking action at the time and not waiting too long. This is why Horatio wasn't king. Horatio didn't have a struggle with taking revenge and didn't have the same struggles as Hamlet. However, Fortinbras did have the same struggle as Hamlet and Shakespeare wanted to make his point across that you will be rewarded for being active at the moment, like fortinbras. Rewarding Horatio as king would not get this point across. I think that the people will benefit from Fortinbras as king. He has great leader qualities. Also he is in no way related to Hamlet, therefore the family drama will no longer continue. The people of Denmark can put their trust in Fortinbras as king because he has no reason to want to take revenge on any other family members.

  8. I think that the people of Denmark will live their lives normally but will feel less secure with their kingdom. Knowing that these things are happening with their Kings, Queen, and all the other important people they will feel not as safe with how things are being controlled. They will think they cant trust the next king as much, so now Fortinbras has a lot on his plate. I think Fortinbras would be a better fit for King because if Hamlet thought Fortinbras would be a better king over his best friend, then that shows a lot. Also he wasn't involved too much with everything so he doesn't really know everything like Horatio does, now their will be no grudges held and hopefully everything will work smoothly.

  9. I think that Denmark will end up being okay. Nothing too tragic or chaotic will happen. One point that I like was when Dani said that they will feel a little less secure about the country that they live in because all traces of natural born power have been killed in a very short amount of time. Although Fortinbras is a very capable leader they people of Denmark have to be a little skeptical at first, but given the time period that they live in, this sort of overtaking is not too uncommon. I also think that Hamlet chose Fortinbras to become kind instead of Horatio because Fortinbras is an experienced leader and he knows what he is doing. Horatio would scare the country even more because of his lack of experience.

  10. Fortinbras is an exerianced leader, will probably be good for the country of Denmark. Fortinbras can provide more military support and resources from Norway. If Horatio had become king he has no experiance and the people would question his power because he has no royal blood. I would think Fortinbras would have try'd to take the kingdom soon enough.

  11. I think the people of Denmark will continue functioning normally because they seemed to handle the change from Old King Hamlet to Claudius well. However I think that they may start to feel some discomfort at the number of transitions and the frequency at which they are occurring. Fortinbras seems like a strong enough leader to last for a while. I think the people of Denmark will adjust to Fortinbras quite well. I think that Horatio is not the ruler because he is not as strong of a leader as Fortinbras. Fortinbras is a man of action who will do everything in his power to make sure that his kingdom, which now includes Denmark, is strong, safe, and secure. From what we see of Horatio’s character, he is more in a supporting role and would be a good adviser, but I think he is too weak to be a leader. Hamlet I think knew this about Horatio and that is why he decided to make Fortinbras leader instead.

  12. I think that Denmark might have some issues in the beginning because of the fact of Hamlet dying and Fortinbras being the enemy but I think they will slowly get use to the fact and be content. They also will probably be in a state of panic since they lost their king, queen, and heir to be as well so when they find out they have a replacement it might actually put their mind at peace even if the replacement is the enemy. I think the reason Fortinbras is the king now instead of Horatio because he has more experience in being a king then Horatio does. It also brings peace to Denmark since Fortinbras will be king because Frotinbras will not cause a war in order to take over Denmark like he was planning to do. Hamlet also gave Frotinbras the honor of being the king because Hamlet knew that was the honorable thing to do and he knew that Fortinbras will bring peace back to Denmark.

  13. I think that perhaps the people of Denmark will feel more confident in their leading royalty because Fortinbras will not (as far as we know) cause any more problems between the royal family. The people of Denmark will perhaps like this because they know that the royalty are able to stand for them, while not being broken down by the fights going on within the royal family. I think that Fortinbras was chosen to be king because he did have experience ruling a country whereas that would be a random place for Horatio to have been placed in. Fortinbras was able to take action quickly and therefore deserved this spot as the king of Denmark. He has enough experience as to that Denmark should be ruled well from that point on of him being crowned.

  14. I believe that the people of Denmark will take kindly to Fortinbras taking over, especially because Hamlet even gave him his blessings basically. The Danish will be happy that all the drama is over and someone will be able to take the crown quickly. Fortinbras was crowned king, not Horatio, because Fortinbras is from a royal family, while Horatio is poor and was only Hamlet's best friend. It is more sensible for Fortinbras to be the successor to the Danish throne.

  15. I think that the people of Denmark will live the same lives when KIng Hamlet had the thrown and when Claudius had it. The reason why Fortinbras is the king and not Horatio is because Fortinbras has man power over Horatio. If Horatio had an army and could fight Fortinbras for the thrown I bet he would but he can't. Fortinbras is already a leader in another country and is suitable for the job to lead the country..

  16. Since we don't really know much about how the people of Denmark were living before, I think they will live pretty much the same lives granted Fortinbras doesn't change anything extreme. The reason Fortinbras is king is because he is already king of another place and has good leadership skills and Horatio doesn't really have a way to the throne. Like Jack said, if Horatio had an army that could fight Fortinbras he would have a chance but he doesn't.
